Jann E. Vendetti, Ph.D.

Jann received her Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley in 2009 studying whelks in the gastropod family Buccinidae, including aspects of paleontology, larval and molecular biology.  At UC Berkeley, Jann was a teaching instructor for six courses including Paleontology, Biological Oceanography, Evolution, and Introductory Biology.

As a postdoctoral researcher at CSU Los Angeles (2010-2014), Jann collected genetic and morphological data used to infer evolutionary relationships and describe species in the sea slug clade Sacoglossa.  We have coauthored monographic works describing new species, and phylogenetic studies on the macroevolutionary effects of larval development.  Jann also catalogued the biodiversity of sacoglossans as a recipient of a David Rubenstein postdoctoral fellowship from the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL), a Smithsonian Institute-based project that aims to produce a webpage for each of the 1.8 million species on planet earth. Click here for a poster explaining Jann's EOL work.

Jann became the Twila Bratcher Endowed Chair in Malacological Research at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, where she now holds a permanent curatorial position.  She continues to collaborate with our lab, and is actively involved in promoting citizen science initiatives.  She was President of the Western Society of Malacology in 2017.  For more information, see:
